January Update


  • CSSA Store: Last chance to purchase additional CSSA gear before the end of the season:  https://stores.inksoft.com/calgary_speed_skating/shop/home
  • Alberta Speed Skating Performance Badge Program: Performance badges for races up to December 1sthave been distributed to all athletes.  In late January-early February, we will be distributing some additional badges for the recent long track competitions.  White badge: participating in 1stcompetition.  Green, Red, Iron, Bronze, Silver and Gold badges are all time-based for both short-track (200m, 400m, 1500m 3000m) and long-track (300m, 500m, 1500m, 3000m).  See the Alberta Amateur Speed Skating Association website for the details of the time standards: http://www.albertaspeedskating.ca/images/AASSA_Badge_Program_v30Nov2018.pdf
  • The Cutting Edge Pin Program from Speed Skating Canada: focuses on skills development for young skaters and has 11 levels.  The coaching staff will be starting these evaluations in January.
  • COOP fundraiser: We still have COOP gift cards for sale.  CSSA earns 9.5% from every dollar spent and there is no expiry date.  If you shop at COOP grocery stores or buy gas from the COOP gas bars, come by the CSSA office to purchase yours today.  Payment can be made by cash, cheque or e-transfer.
  • WestJet fundraiser: Thanks to Brad Gilbert, our friendly WestJet pilot, the CSSA have been the lucky recipients of WestJet flight passes for our raffle.  4,000 raffle tickets of $5 each will be distributed to skating families in the next week or so, giving our club the opportunity to fundraise $20,000. There will be prizes for the skater selling the most tickets and a pizza party for the group that sells the most tickets.
  • Upcoming seminars skaters and parents: We are working on finalizing details on a nutrition seminar in the next few weeks and will communicate details soon.
  • Vintage CSSA gear for sale: Stop by the CSSA office to get your, only hats ($5) and jackets ($20) are remaining.
  • All Sport One City: During the week of January 21, the CSSA will be participating in this city-wide event sponsored by Sport Calgary.  It is the perfect way for adults (U of C students and CSSA parents) to try a new sport such as speed skating. Both long-track and short-track sessions are being offered.  Register at www.sportcalgary.ca
  • Alberta Open Indoor Long Track (ABLT): was held January 12-13, 2019 with over 200 skaters participating from the various western provinces and even Montana, USA.

A huge thank you to the organizing committee, especially our VC Competition, Lee Diebert and our member at large, Kim Patterson, as well as all the other volunteer parents, officials and Oval staff for putting on such a successful event.  Congratulations also to all skaters who performed very well and achieved many personal bests.

  • Interclub short-track mini-meet: will be held on Sunday, February 3rdfrom 9:15 AM until 1:30 PM. If you have not done a competition yet, this is a great one to start and a great warm-up for RU Fast.  The mini-meet is open to all skaters in the FUNdamentals, Learn to Train (L2T) and Train to Train (T2T) groups.
  • RU Fast: The CSSA’s largest competition will be held on the long weekend, February 16-17.   The hockey rink (for the FUNdamentals and L2T) and speed skating rink (T2T and older) will both be used all day.
